About

Founded by Nick Menzies in 1992, Menzies Hotels grew rapidly to become a leading UK regional hotel group with a strong brand presence and loyal customer base as well as a highly-diverse range of locations and hotel formats.

Alcuin led the recapitalisation in 2000 to allow for the continued expansion of new sites, together with the development and the upgrading of existing sites. Alcuin’s original investment was also followed by further material investment in 2001 to support the acquisition and redevelopment of three large city-centre hotels from Hilton to help re-position the portfolio.

The successful strategy allowed for a very material increase in both the revenue and earnings, and the sale of the expanded group to a financial investor in 2005, generating an attractive return for Alcuin.
